5 Spring Books for Kids
Below are 5 quality spring books for kids. Your elementary students are going to love these spring picture books! All of them are part of my Starts With a Story collection.
1. Spring Stinks by Ryan T. Higgins
In Ryan T. Higgins’ Spring Stinks, all of the animals in the forest are excited about spring, except for Bruce. His rabbit friend Ruth is excited to share all the smells of spring with Bruce, however, he is less than excited.
Ruth brings Bruce around the forest having him smell the flowers, grass, trees, and even a wet moose! She collects the smells in Bruce’s basket. Finally, she thinks of something bears like to smell, honey! However, the bees end up chasing and stinging Bruce cenementing his belief that spring stinks.
Students’ favorite character, Bruce, is back in this hilarious spring story!
2. When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes
Kevin Henkes book, When Springs Comes, describes the changes that take place as winter turns into spring. In the winter, the tree branches are bare and stick out against the blue sky. However, as it turns into spring, the trees grow green leaves and blossoms. The piles of snow slowly melt and the grass turns from brown to green. Flowers grow and new baby birds are born.
Another change that comes with spring is the rain. There are puddles and mud. We see new plants start to grow and it is the perfect time for gardening. It can take awhile for spring to come and stay but when it does, we can see, hear, feel and smell it.
This story is the perfect book to read as the seasons change from winter to spring.
3. Spring is Here by Will Hillenbrand
In Spring is Here by Will Hillenbrand, Mole woke up and went outside to smell the fresh air. Wondering if it was spring, he stepped in mud and saw snow melting. He had to tell Bear!
But each time he went to wake up Bear, he was ignored with a snore. He tried tapping on the window, tickling his nose, and even playing his instrument to no avail.
Finally, he had an idea. He milked, churned, mixed, and baked. Mole brought in the food under Bear’s nose. He woke up, and shouted to Mole- “Wake up! Spring is here!
4. Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak
Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kendard Pak is a beautifully written book describing the changes that take place as winter turns to spring. It follows a young boy walking outside with his dog. The boy is taking in the setting around him: the snow falling, the wind blowing branches in the trees, and the frozen water in the pond and brook.
Slowly, he starts noticing signs of winter ending and spring beginning. It is getting lighter out earlier and the snow is starting to melt. New leaves are starting to grow on the trees and the animals are coming back out. The sun is much brighter and it is getting warmer outside.
Kenard Pak’s book is the perfect way to discuss the change of seasons with students!
5. Fletcher and The Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson
In Fletcher and The Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson, it is a nice spring day and Fletcher is outside enjoying nature. He finds himself in an orchard after tumbling down a hill and is surprised by what he sees: white flakes falling from the sky! Fletcher is immediately concerned about the cold and how it will affect the buds and butterflies so he sets off to spread the word.
Fletcher comes across a group of birds and explains they’ve flown home too early. He tells them about the snow that is coming and they decide that before they fly south they must tell Porcupine. When Porcupine hears about the snow, he is concerned about Squirrel and whether or not he has enough food. The group of animals set out to warn Squirrel.
Squirrel hears about the snow and wants to tell the rabbits so they can eat as much grass as they can. The rabbits hear about the snow and decide before they start eating, they should all go play! All the animals make their way to the orchard and realize that it wasn’t snow after all! Blossoms were falling from the trees! All of the animals have fun playing in the piles of blossoms together.
