In the story Jamaica and the Substitute Teacher, Jamaica and Brianna are thrilled at how kind their substitute Mrs. Duval is. Jamaica really enjoys her substitute teacher and wants to be perfect for her. She feels happy and proud when she works with her.

When it is time to take a spelling test, Jamaica doesn’t remember all of her words and decides to copy her friend Brianna’s paper. Jamaica feel very guilty for copying and doesn’t turn in her spelling test. When Mrs. Duval asks to see Jamaica’s test, Jamaica apologizes to Mrs. Duval for copying and learns that it is more important to try her best than it is to be perfect.
